Glimpse American life through the lens of one of the country's earliest news picture agencies. The following visualization clusters 24,026 daily news photographs taken by the Bain News Service circa 1910-1912. These photographs come from News in the 1910s, a Flickr album containing a subset of the George Grantham Bain Collection held at the Library of Congress.
This project uses PixPlot, open-source software developed by the Yale Digital Humanities Laboratory, to visualize large-scale image collections within an interactive WebGL scene. Each image is processed with an Inception Convolutional Neural Network, trained on ImageNet 2012, and projected into a two-dimensional manifold with the UMAP algorithm such that similar images appear proximate to one another.
